After a hammam, your skin feels impossibly soft. It has been steamed, soaped, scrubbed and rinsed, and the temptation is to keep going with every product on the shelf. Please do not. The best post-hammam routine is short, gentle and focused on comfort. Here is a simple five-step ritual.
Why aftercare matters
Heat and exfoliation can leave skin feeling warm and more sensitive than usual. That does not mean your skin is damaged, but it does mean it deserves a break from strong actives, harsh scrubs and long, hot showers. A calm routine helps the skin settle while you enjoy that freshly polished feeling.
Step 1: Cool down and rinse
Let your body cool gradually. When you shower, use lukewarm water rather than hot, and skip the body scrub. A gentle, fragrance-free cleanser is enough for the face; the rest of the body can simply be rinsed. Pat dry with a clean towel instead of rubbing vigorously.
Step 2: Hydrate inside and out
Drink a glass of water. Heat can leave you feeling thirsty, and hydration supports how your skin looks and feels. If you enjoy a facial mist, choose a simple hydrating one without alcohol or strong fragrance. It is a nice way to cool the face after steam.
Step 3: Moisturise while skin is slightly damp
Apply a gentle moisturiser within a few minutes of drying off, while the skin is still slightly damp. Look for a comfortable body cream or lotion with ceramides, glycerin, shea butter or squalane. For the face, use a moisturiser you already know suits you rather than trying a new active product on the same day.
Pay a little extra attention to dry areas such as elbows, knees and shins. If your skin feels tight, add a second layer rather than reaching for a strong exfoliant.
Step 4: Protect your skin
If you are heading out in daylight, apply sunscreen to exposed skin. Freshly exfoliated skin can be more sensitive to the sun, so a broad-spectrum SPF is a sensible step. Wear a hat or light covering if you are spending time outdoors, and avoid sunbeds.
Step 5: Rest and keep it simple
Give your skin — and yourself — a quiet evening. Avoid alcohol, long hot baths and tight clothing that rubs against freshly exfoliated skin. Sleep is part of skincare too; a good night's rest helps you wake up looking and feeling better.
What to skip for 24 hours
- Retinol, AHAs, BHAs and strong vitamin C. Let your skin settle first.
- Another scrub or dry brush. Your skin has already been exfoliated.
- Hot showers, saunas and steam rooms. Give your body a break from heat.
- Heavy, fragranced products if your skin feels sensitive or warm.
- Waxing or laser hair removal. Book these for another day.
If your skin feels irritated, red or uncomfortable for more than a day, stop the routine and speak to a pharmacist or your GP. If you have a known skin condition, follow the advice you have already been given.
When to book your next treatment
Most people can enjoy a hammam every few weeks, but there is no fixed rule. Let your skin and schedule guide you. If you want to build a regular routine, pair your hammam with a gentle facial a few days later rather than on the same day.
Keep the glow
A hammam is a reset, not a reason to overhaul your entire routine. Rinse, hydrate, moisturise, protect and rest. That is enough. To book your next hammam, view our spa pricing or contact Liya Pure Beauty & Spa in Kensington.
